Sambhal Jama Masjid Committee Takes Legal Battle to Supreme Court.......
The Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid Committee has appealed to the Supreme Court against a local court's order mandating a survey of the mosque. The survey was ordered in response to a lawsuit alleging that the mosque was built on the site of a demolished temple.
A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hear the case tomorrow. Last week, a local court in Sambhal issued an ex-parte order for the survey, without hearing the mosque committee's side.
The lawsuit claims that the mosque, constructed by Mughal emperor Babar in 1526, was built on the ruins of a Hindu temple. The order sparked tensions, leading to violence that resulted in four deaths.
The mosque committee argues that the hasty survey order caused unnecessary fear and unrest among local residents. They contend that the lawsuit is barred by the Places of Worship Act and that the mosque, being an ancient monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is exempt from such surveys.
