Opposition Pushes for Impeachment of Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar.......

The opposition INDIA bloc is reportedly preparing to initiate an impeachment motion against Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The move comes amidst allegations of partisanship and suppression of dissent in the parliamentary proceedings. The opposition accuses Dhankhar of consistently favoring the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and undermining their ability to voice concerns in the Upper House.

This potential impeachment motion would be historic, as no Vice-President of India has ever faced such action. According to the Constitution, removing the Vice-President requires a majority vote in both houses of Parliament. However, with the INDIA bloc holding only 103 seats in the 250-member Rajya Sabha, the motion is unlikely to succeed numerically. Nevertheless, opposition leaders view this as a symbolic act to highlight their grievances over parliamentary integrity.

Recent controversies in the Rajya Sabha have intensified tensions. Opposition leaders, including Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge, criticized Dhankhar for allegedly silencing them during debates and prioritizing issues raised by the ruling party. On Monday, chaos erupted in the House as opposition MPs staged walkouts, accusing Dhankhar of rejecting their motions while permitting debates favoring the NDA's agenda.

The INDIA bloc's leaders, including TMC’s Sagarika Ghose, framed this move as a fight for preserving democratic values, accusing the BJP government of eroding parliamentary independence. Despite procedural hurdles, the opposition plans to submit the required notice soon, ensuring at least 14 days for consideration under constitutional provisions.
