Indian Parliamentary Session Concludes Amidst Protests and Disruptions.......
India’s
Parliament has just adjourned its least productive session in over a year,
characterized by disruptions, brawls and rising tensions between the government
and the opposition. The monsoon session — usually a key time for legislative
debate — continued its unruly trend and ended with incomplete agenda.
At the heart of the discord
were opposition calls for an investigation into allegations against the
billionaire Gautam Adani, a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Allegations of cronyism, driven by controversial financial irregularities and
the appearance of clients paying bribes in exchange for government contracts,
deepened the political divide. Opposition parties claimed Adani’s relationship
with Modi was eroding transparency in the government.
The turmoil reached a high
point of scuffles between MPs, incessant adjournments, and a collapse in
decorum. Some lawmakers denounced those actions as undignified, while others
defended them as necessary to raise alarms about urgent issues. The government’s
efforts to push key legislation, including proposed economic reforms, were
largely brought to a halt by walkouts and a lack of consensus on the opposition
side. It all drew fresh exasperation from Speaker Om Birla at the session’s
failure, and spurred him to tell MPs to put the country before their political
interests.
Adani probe': BJP accuses
opponents of stalling proceedings to divert attention from their failures,
rejects opposition calls to investigate Adani Opposition leaders have vowed to
intensify their campaign with nationwide protests and public outreach to expose
purported corruption. The dysfunction of this session has alarmed observers of
India’s parliamentary democracy. Deepening polarization and eroding debate
threaten the effectiveness of democratic institutions, analysts warn. With
urgent matters such as economic recovery and climate change at hand, some
restoration of decorum and constructive dialogue is needed.
