Unions Intensify Protests as Dallewal's Health Worsens.......
Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal's health has significantly deteriorated after 43 days of an indefinite hunger strike, prompting unions to escalate their protests. Dallewal, convener of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), has been fasting to demand farm reforms and has consistently refused medical assistance.
In response, the Kisan Mazdoor
Morcha and allied unions have announced a series of nationwide demonstrations.
On January 10, they plan to burn effigies in villages across the country.
Additionally, during the Lohri festival on January 13, they intend to burn
copies of the Centre’s draft National Policy Framework on Agricultural
Marketing. A nationwide tractor protest is also scheduled for January 26.
Dallewal's condition is critical;
his blood pressure dropped to 80/56, and he has experienced multiple episodes
of vomiting. Despite interventions from health officials and former law
enforcement, he remains steadfast in his protest, emphasizing that farm reforms
are his priority over personal well-being. The Supreme Court has intervened,
directing Punjab officials to provide medical aid to Dallewal. However, he has
declined assistance, insisting on dialogue with the Union government. The
situation remains tense, with unions warning of nationwide unrest if Dallewal's
health continues to decline without governmental engagement.
